Compassion Fatigue In-Service

The work we do has an impact on our lives, both professional and personal. Compassion fatigue can result from either a one-time exposure to a vicarious traumatic event or from cumulative exposure to grief and trauma. Compassion fatigue manifests at the behavioral, physical, and emotional levels with different symptoms for different individuals. This in-service helps you and your staff develop an awareness of the symptoms and create options for minimizing the effect of the difficult work we do.

“The expectation that we can be immersed in suffering and loss daily and not be touched by it is as unrealistic as expecting to be able to walk through water without getting wet.”  Remen, 1996
