Hospital Information
Federal Regulations require that hospitals refer all deaths and imminent death to the local organ procurement organization in a timely matter. Hospitals in Louisiana must report each death to LOPA to be screened for eligible organ, eye and tissue donors. LOPA then refers eye donations to Southern Eye Bank, who will coordinate eye donation cases directly with the hospital.
Southern Eye Bank offers a variety of training and services to meet each hospital’s educational goals and give staff an understanding of the federally required compliances as well as the donation process. One eye donor is able to restore eyesight in two people and enhance eyesight in an additional four people. For these reasons, it is helpful to understand the donation process and the need for corneal transplantation.
Hospital staff education includes:
- Federal requirements and hospital policy
- Need for donation
- Criteria for donation
- Access to medical records/HIPAA regulations
- Roles of hospital staff
- Recovery process
- Release of the body
- Trained Designated requestor approaches
- Southern Eye Bank resources for donor families and recipients
Southern Eye Bank staff is also available for new nurse orientations, skills fairs, health fairs, and other hospital events. Please call Joy Fragola at 337-781-8302 for additional information.
